Wheelchair Curling
Monday the 24th of May saw the beginning of Australia’s first dedicated Wheelchair Curling program at Australia’s new home of winter sport, the Ice House in Docklands Melbourne. The program has been put together in partnership with the Victorian Curling Association and Disabled WinterSport Australia.
The first session included 11 participants getting on the ice to try curling for the first time. Jim Oastler, from the Victorian Curling Association (VCA), who is coaching the program, was very pleased with the turn out and is excited about the future. People participating in the first session came from all sporting backgrounds including skiing, lawn bowls and ice skating.
Disabled WinterSport Australia, Program Manager, Sven Erikson, is excited to see the addition of Wheelchair Curling to the winter and Ice sports on offer for people with disabilities and looks forward to supporting the growth of WC Curling in Australia. He also said "it offers people a fantastic social opportunity to meet new people and enjoy the facilities the Ice House has to offer in a relaxed friendly environment."
From now on WC curling will be happening once a month down at the Ice House. If you are interested and would like to come along, come on down!
