Northcott Society Shred Smiggins!
Northcott have a long history with DWA .Northcott look after lots of people with limited movement and cognitive skills. DWA has for over a decade offered escape and respite for Northcott members and their carers, by taking everyone skiing.
This year we had nine Northcott members come up to ski in sit skis. Of the nine over fifty precent of them had come skiing for five years or more, so it was great to see many familiar faces and the feelings were reciprocated. Lots of hugs.
Of the nine people seven where at the snow to fang around with DWA guides and fang is what we did. Emrys sorted all guides into pairs and we initially rode the Pommers and the Chair of Smiggins Holes, accessing our participants comfort and their thermal abilities and to make sure DWA sit skis fit the skiers safely and comfortably. Lastly to get the guides safe and comfortable.
From midweek we got our posse of seven skiers together and headed for the Link T-bar (Perisher),cruised over to The Interceptor T-bar (Perisher) and then over to Happy Valley Quad chair (Blue Cow). Lapped it a couple of times then skied back to Smiggins Holes. Along the way we skied green and blue trails through forests of Snow Gumsand on to beautiful views of The Main Range, a journey of about 12-15kms.
Buzzing from this group cruise and all people warm and safe we headed to Front Valley Perisher the next day making sure to take in Leichart Terrain Park………three times! Simply awesome.
Nick and Andrew didn’t come on the cruise. Nick has come skiing with DWA before and Andrew is new to the mountains, they both roll in wheelchairs. Ursina took these guys for lessons individually every day, she did a great job . Both Nick and Andrew skied independently by weeks end. Nick had skied before and is already independent, it was nice to see him refine what he had learnt over the previous years. Andrewis new to the mountains and to skiing. On Monday he did OK, Tuesday hmmmm, Wednesday nailed it! Thursday Refine and improved it. This for me was the moment of the camp, carers had tears in their eyes. it’salways special to watch the moment of independence and confidence.
The three Perisher instructors did a great job Ursina with Nick and Andrew. Bill with Ollie on a bi unique and Tom with Vickie in a Mountain man all three of them have great skills. (get them again!, and again!)
